A liquid spill is the #1 cause of “Laptop Death.” Whether it’s water, sugary soda, or coffee, the clock starts ticking the moment it hits the keys.
🚨 EMERGENCY STEPS (First 60 Seconds)
- Force Shutdown: Hold the Power Button until the screen goes black.
- Unplug Everything: Remove the charger and any USB devices.
- The “Tent” Position: Flip the laptop upside down (like a tent) over a towel. This prevents liquid from seeping deeper into the motherboard.
How to Clean the Stickness
If your laptop survived but the keys are now “crunchy” or sticking:
- The 99% Rule: Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Do not use 70% (rubbing alcohol), as it contains 30% water which can cause corrosion.
- The Q-Tip Method: Dip a cotton swab in the 99% alcohol and rub it around the edges of the sticky key. Tap the key repeatedly to let the alcohol dissolve the sugar underneath.
- For Deep Cleans: Most modern “Chiclet” keys can be popped off with a flat tool, but be careful—the plastic “butterfly” clips underneath are extremely fragile. If the key doesn’t pop easily, don’t force it.
Warning: If your laptop won’t turn on at all after a spill, do not try to charge it. This will short-circuit the board. [Contact a Professional Liquid Damage Expert immediately].
